Bag 16 – taken

Years ago, i wore this purse to my friend and hairstylist’s house. When she saw it, she about snatched it off my shoulder, she liked it so much. She told me if i ever got rid of it to let her know. Well, that day has come. I found this mock-croc leather hobo at Goodwill. “Oh my gosh,” Jaiya said, “it has wings! What is all this!” “Style,” i informed her. Made by Viva of California, it’s vintage and cool. Email me at 50favbags@gmail.com if you like it.

Modeled by Kaia, photos by Jaiya. When i asked Kaia to model earlier today, she said, “I need to wait until Jaiya gets home to take the picture. Please?” These two.

Bag 11

Sometimes a bag is such a great bargain, i can’t leave it in the thrift store. This Nine West shoulder bag contains a matching wrist wallet and a detachable keychain – what a bargain! I was going to keep the wristlet and get rid of the purse, but then i decided the set needed to stay a set. If you love pockets, pouches, and more organization, this is for you. Small bags like this can hold a lot when everything has its place.

Now don’t be put off by this moss/olivey color. It isn’t necessarily a great match with black, or brown, but if you wear it with a colorful top or dress, say with jeans or khakis, you’re styling. Oh and it’s VEGAN – the new lingo meaning it’s not made of leather. I love it. Email me at 50favbags@gmail.com if you like this one.

Jaiya really loves to model, and Kaia likes taking photos. This time they wanted to get Spencer into the mix. So here you are. Life with these girls! The best!

I collect Fossils. Yes, actual fossil rocks, and Fossil bags. Here’s one i got at the Mt. Washington Goodwill boutique. Honestly, that spot is not as great as it used to be. The Mt. Washington St. Vincent de Paul is much better for bags and everything else, in my opinion. This bag is roomy inside, with plenty of space for your water bottle, magazine or tablet device. If you’d like it, email me at 50favbags.com with bag #11.

bag #5

IMG_7455Here’s a tote for someone with a lot to haul. This is one of those bags I still really like, but am giving up due to volume. I bought it at my favorite Goodwill for $5 because I loved the color and the faux-woven texture. I’m sure it’s one of those fragrance or cosmetics gift-with-purchase deals. It’s pleather, so you can wipe it down as needed. I’ve used this to carry a 15″ laptop, purse, water bottle and more. I’ve also taken it on the plane and it fits under the seat nicely. It has a tab snap closure. Wait, I’m about to talk myself into keeping it. NO, no, it’s yours if you email 50favbags@gmail.com.

So since yesterday Jaiya got to pick, I offered to let Kaia pick today. She was indifferent until I said “Ok, Jaiya you go pick and Kaia, you pick and I’ll see which one I want to do.” “But she got to pick by herself yesterday, it’s notfaaaaiiiiirrr…” and she made her selection. When I asked her why she choose this one, she said “I don’t know, it was the first one I saw.” Whatever. I’ll take what I can get from a 15-year-old. Photo by Kaia McKenney. TAKEN – thanks!

this ugg purse is one of my favorite scores from my spot, goodwill. i got it the same time i got my famed stolen calvin klein purse. sometimes, when it rains, it pours at that location, like my recent trip. i got this for $10, half off of $20. this is some of the softest leather that isn’t pebbled or italian. i didn’t have anything like this, so it was a very welcome addition to the family.

several of my friends have begged me to let them have this purse (you know who you are). the answer is no. when will i ever be able to afford a purse like this unless i get it at a resale store? the 12th of never, that’s when.

confession: this was hard to write today, because a friend of mine said on facebook that i should auction all of these purses off on the last day to “cleanse my soul”. this has really bothered me. the whole reason i took this on was to do something for myself, learn something about myself, and perhaps about my love of bags. i don’t think my soul needs cleansing. at least, not the way he suggested. i immediately got defensive and started to type a response, then i’d erase it. i started again, and again – but every response felt defensive. i don’t have a need or desire to defend my purse collection. if anyone thinks that my large collection makes me selfish, a hoarder, vacuous, materialistic, or whatever, that’s fine. i know myself and the good and bad i do in the world. after a day of struggling with that comment, i’m at peace. so is my soul. for now. i do have a kid about to graduate, remember? the peace doesn’t always last for long, but i certainly know how to seek it and find it. and on that note, i’m headed to church for Pentecost. peace.

side pouch – one of two

i had a good time shopping yesterday, but i must admit to feeling a little let down with the purse selection – especially at my favorite goodwill. but i was cool with it. every day is not a great day for bags, but the process is usually cathartic and rewarding. yesterday as i was paying for a few items of clothing for my girls, Esmerelda* and i had this exchange:

  • Esmerelda: if you come back later, i’ll have some more clothes out.
  • me: what about purses?
  • Esmerelda: yeah, maybe i’ll have time to put some more purses out. it is looking a little skimpy over there, isn’t it?
  • me: i’ll see you later.

but, i didn’t have the chance to get back out there. this goodwill is around the corner from my girls’ old elementary school, where i also used to work. it was easy to scoot in there and check the merch on any day of the week, and even go back after school if there was good stuff for the girls. but it’s 20+ minutes from my house, and i can only justify going out there once a week.

but Esmerelda’s words haunted me. i could’t stop thinking about the fabulous bags in the workroom. there were good bags back there, bags that i would miss if i didn’t make another trip. i tried to talk myself out of going but… well, fast forward to 9am this morning:

  • ring, ring – Peony* answers: Goodwill, may i help you?
  • me: hi, this is miriam. did Esmerelda put out any purses yesterday?
  • Peony: i’m not sure, she’s not here yet.
  • me: well, she told me she was going to, and i don’t want to drive all the way out there if she didn’t, i was just there yesterday. i’m the one who comes in on mondays, and sometimes other days…
  • Peony: oh, i could tell who you were from your voice. i could always put some purses in a cart and wheel it out…
  • me: i’m on the way.

so i went out there, shopped and was at work by 9:55 am. today’s bag is one of the ones i got. yes, i took my stuff out of the other bag i planned to use and rocked this one TODAY. my mom would be so proud – it’s my first spectator bag! she loved spectators almost as much as Aigner, and if it was an Aigner spectator then it was ON. she did have an Aigner navy and white spectator purse and matching shoes. bad to the bone.

this is a tinganello color me classy cross body. it’s retailing on Amazon for $129 and i paid $6 – yes, it was half off purses today. black and white pebbled leather with a convertible strap, making it also a shoulder bag. pockets inside and out, the hardware is on point, zipperd side pouches, as in one on each side – it’s the bomb.

i also scored two more good ones that you will be seeing in the next few days. and, the fossil i kicked to the curb this morning will be back.

it pays to be nice to the workers at your local thrift store. they are often wonderful people – sure, i’ve met a few duds – and when you’re nice to them, they are more willing to be nice to you. i don’t expect special treatment for being kind and respectful, but isn’t it nice to receive it anyway? i LOVE my favorite goodwill! i am truly thankful for goodwill, st. vincent, and other thrift stores that are ministries to the human race. i receive many a blessing thanks to thrift stores and deeply appreciate all involved in getting the products to the floor.

peace.

the sak black pebbled leather convertible tote, overlooking the athletic field

some people refer to my alma mater as a cult. those people are usually haters who did not attend Walnut Hills High School, one of the best high schools in the country. it’s one of the reasons my east coast husband will live in cincinnati – so his kids can attend. after running into a high school friend of mine at his work in new jersey 20 years ago, he started to understand that Walnut is special.

the sak purse with the WHHS flying pig

well, we have a daughter who is a senior, and she’s about to graduate from this amazing institution. i’m so proud of her. so today, i carried the bag she chose for me last weekend that i rejected, and took these photos at her senior ensemble concert held earlier this evening. (bag: goodwill, $8) this is a new wing of the school – when i attended, it was known as the annex – language classes, honors, and lest i forget – typing class. it’s so beautiful now, and i’m happy that these kids have a beautiful school in which to learn and hang out with friends.

high school was a wonderful time of my life. i did honors and choir, yet i wasn’t a total nerd. i had a great 6 years. i have no desire to go back, or have doovers. i’m just so thankful and glad my kids are there. this year was a fun year with one as a senior and one as an effie – that’s 7th grader to you civilians. so i’ve got 5 more years to embarrass the crap out of her! whoooooooooo! go Walnut!

day 30

20130430-232456.jpg

gold pebbled leather bag by the sak

20130430-232517.jpgi had a rough day today – i was sick all day and couldn’t pull it together. at least i got my kids where they needed to be. i grabbed this bag to drive j to school this morning, pick her up and pick up n from work. it looks so small, it surprised me by fitting my stuff and water bottle. until today, i’ve just enjoyed looking at it and wanting to use it, and now that i have i’ll definitely use it again. the lining is nice, too.

i got this bag at goodwill because it had this cool bottom. it was brand new, got it for $6. by the way – when i give a price, if it’s from goodwill it’s usually the 50% off price.

so i admit, this started as a purse rescue – but now it’s officially part of the family and not getting sold.

yesterday, i mentioned all of the things i do on mondays – i forgot to mention thrifting. don’t ask me how i could forget! mid 40s mental meltdown, who knows. but it is definitely one of my favorite monday activities that is not just limited to mondays. hello, sale weekends!

day 29

jil sander pebbled leather dome bag

Imagewell, this is a case of a very, very lucky find at goodwill. maybe a couple of years ago, i saw this bag hanging on the rack at my favorite goodwill. the leather looked real, and when i saw jil sander stamped on the front, i was pretty sure it wasn’t a fake. so i checked inside. the interior is just as luxurious as the exterior. there’s a low pocket that acts as a divider, and a zipper pouch reserved for my phone. the straps are long, and it holds my water bottle – win. it elevates any outfit and, well – it makes me feel special. all that class for $10.

i saved this bag until the second half of the journey so that i wouldn’t use all of my favorite favorites in the first week. mondays are my day for errands, dr. appointments for myself or the girls, and volunteering. i also try to catch my friend jill for a commiserative chat about our hs seniors. realization of the day – life comes at you fast. take it slow as often as you can. peace.

day 20

vintage Oroton frame purse

Image

Oroton Sydney detail inside

i have a thing for frame bags. i remember playing in my mom’s closet when i was little, and finding her frame bags and just opening and closing them. some of the hinges and closures were so cool. yes, my love of bags began in my mom’s closet. there was a vast array of purses to choose from. she was seriously into Aigner. she also had this patchwork leather satchel in colorful neutrals – totally ’70s . i wish i knew what happened to that bag, because i would rock it with abandon.

so when i saw this Oroton frame bag at my favorite goodwill, i thought ok, this could be cool. it reminded me of something my mom would own. i got closer and touched the leather, opened and closed it a few times, and was completely on board. now, i had never heard of this brand, but that wasn’t going to stop me from making a purchase. i was just happy to have something that reminded me of mom. here’s another case of a bag that i don’t carry often, but i just like to look at it.

it’s saturday, and i spent most of the day at home. i did go out to the library, so it was time to choose a purse. i went through my usual reticence about making a selection, and in frustration i impulsively grabbed this purse. i like carrying bags on my wrist or by the handles, so that was nice. the quality is amazing. so i googled it earlier, and found out about Oroton. Made in Sydney, Australia, “luxury” bag makers, high end stuff.

then i tried to find a picture of my exact purse. i could tell from the style that it was a little older, so i wasn’t sure i would find it. and then, there it was – on ebay.com.au where the bidding began at $79 and is up to $182.50 with a little over 5 hours to go. i paid $8 for mine. score, and a great reminder of someone i deeply miss.
