You’d think with all of my bags I’d be rocking fabulous stuff all the time. But with my various physical maladies, carrying a backpack is best. That means I carry a purse inside the backpack, and the purse that fits perfectly is this Kipling bag I got at the thrift store a while back. It seems small, but an iPad would fit in there. It has an adjustable shoulder strap, but I unhooked it to make it lighter.
Last week I had to give it up to start the 50 days of favorite bags, but since I’m on a work trip where I needed to bring four bags, I opted for lightweight ones. And we’re back together again!! Yes, it needs a little mending on the sides where the seams are starting to unravel. I will get to that one day. Kipling bags typically have a fuzzy monkey charm, but this one has a tiny brass monkey. Cue the Beastie Boys!!
My favorite thing about this Donna Karan DKNY quilted leather bag is its casual elegance. This looks just as fabulous with a dress and comfort heels as it does with jeans and an oversized sweater, which is how I’d likely wear it. Today is somewhere in between – confirmation and Bishop visit and errands later.
Only DKNY or Calvin Klein or a designer like that could get me to carry a bag with a chain. It’s not my kind of look but somehow it doesn’t look frufru here. The leather ranks in the top five softest in my collection. Maybe top 3 – I’ve never done a softness inventory. Maybe one day.
So here’s how it goes for me at the Mt. Washington St. Vincent de Paul. I go in and get a cart. I make my way to the back where the purses are and start from the right and move left. This bag was right in the beginning, because the colors go from colors on the right to browns, then black, then neutrals. Yeah, it’s this organized. If I see something I like, I get it and put in the cart and keep moving until I’m finished browsing. Then, I examine each bag. This one is a woven kilim style carpet bag with a hinged closure – think doctor bag by T. Cappelli. It has four brass feet, so I knew the quality was there. If I’ve never heard of it, I google it. Sometimes I find that it’s a BS brand, sometimes it’s a QVC or department store brand. Sometimes I find that it’s a legit brand from the 80s. I enjoyed carrying it today and got lots of comments on it. I had it full of stuff, and the magnet closure did not fail. $6.
Yesterday’s bag was a Cole Haan green patent leather satchel-style purse. I think I got it at the thrift store but maybe Clothes Mentor. The scuffs help me know it’s patent leather vs. pleather. Did I mention green is my favorite color? This bag is best worn with a scarf on it and with a not-all-black outfit.
Yesterday’s bag is a green Latico crossbody. The only reason it worked was that I had my backpack. I would need to switch wallets and I forgot to do that. It has card pockets but that’s not how I roll. Still it’s my favorite color and since green doesn’t look great on me in clothes I carry bags. Got this at the thrift store for $3 or $5.
Yesterday’s bag is a Fossil saddlebag I found at the thrift store a few years ago. This pic is at Walnut Hills High School, my beloved school where i thought a steel drum concert was happening. Even though I was wrong, I’m always happy to breathe the rarefied air of WHHS.
As for the bag, it’s a little too small. If I put my water bottle in, the flap doesn’t close all the way. Whatever. I still like it. Long live vintage.
Alleluia! Christ is risen! And now we celebrate this great news for the next fifty days.
My way of celebrating is to carry a different bag from my not-so-big collection every day for the fifty days of Easter. Today’s bag is a Isabella Fiore beaded leather bag that I got at Clothes Mentor a few years ago. The leather on this is gorgeous. The zipper is butter. The beading hooked me. It was $18. Please note that this bag is not up for grabs.
Today was full of my youth group, Jesus, my girls, David, my dad, sunflowers, Easter baskets with chocolate crosses and Squishmallows, and Howard Helvey snapping some pics of me making Korean hand hearts. I hope your day was great!
Let’s end with a bag I started with a few years ago in LA: a black Travelon shoulder bag. Yes the flashlight still works. Top photo is of the back pocket. The bottom photo is of the inside. Two small zipper pockets on the front give you a place for everything.
I remember this trip well. In April of 2013, the board and some staff went to several locations and talked to a pasionate laywoman named Nancy Frausto. It was my first time back in the area in many years. I visited some thrift stores one day and had a really great time. One of the stores sold items preiously used on TV shows. I got a few pieces of jewelry there.
If you would like bag 40 or any other unclaimed bag, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org before Tuesday, April 23.
